What is Fashion?

In simple words, something which is “in fashion” is what is admired and imitated by a large section of people all around us. More often than not, it is a distinctive and often habitual trend related to an individual’s taste in clothes, dictated by the designers and improvised by the tailors and/or budget. To be fashionable is to be a cynosure, directing everyone’s attention to the touch of class and sophistication to a casual attire.

The word fashion instantaneously brings to mind a flash of colour with a dash of glamour – neatly lit ramps, red carpets and paparazzi. But fashion also carries with it a tinge of madness that is usually, associated with anything that qualifies as new and unconventional. And any trend that picks up speed rising high on the popularity scale, is repeatedly personalized by people at every level who make necessary alterations to create a unique made-for-you kind of look.

In a country as culturally diverse as India, fashion often becomes strongly interlinked with the rich local traditions that in turn, find an expression in the new patterns, designs and textiles used by the designers. From the Bandhej skirts of Rajasthan to the silk sarees of Assam and the chikan kurtas of Lucknow, Indian ethnic wear is a broad a category as it can be, carrying within a multitude of styles and trends. Traditional Indian techniques of embroidery such as crewel and zardosi, coupled with traditional weaves and fabrics, are constantly used by Indian designers to fuse the Eastern and Western cultures into an innovative and appealing Indo-western attire.

Indian fashion however, has not remained untouched by the ever-growing influence of the West. But that has not stopped our designers from Indianizing their Western counterparts. Indian prints, textiles and embroidery techniques are being increasingly used in Western wear.

With such raging levels of versatility that is associated with fashion, it’s not uncommon to lose track of what’s new around the block. Trends rise and fall and evolve at the blink of an eye. Not to forget how exhausting it can be to keep an eye out for all the designers constantly innovating and experimenting with different styles and patterns in order to spot an attire that will help create your own unique style.
