A circle can't fit where a square should be

I am by no means a fashionista, but I definitely am a keen observer. From the way I see it, there are a few specific approaches that people take to dress up everyday. Broadly speaking, some people follow all the latest trends, some rebel against the tide and go the complete opposite way, and some just dress the same way for generations at end.

The thing with fashion is, it often changes quicker than most of us can afford to change our wardrobes, and it doesn't always change in our favour (I'm sorry ladies, not everyone can pull off the cropped top). Where being too adventurous could work against you, stagnation itself is a fashion crime. So how does one decide which trend to follow and when to play safe? Unfortunately, that's not something an anonymous blogger can tell you.

The key to dressing well while keeping in line with the latest trends is to know yourself. It may sound clich├ęd, but it's true. You need to figure out the following things about yourself:

- What is your style? Though you may conveniently categorize yourself into general categories such as 'casual, laid back', 'fresh and hep' etc, remember that your style is unique to you. You don't need to fit into one single bracket, and you definitely don't need to pretend to belong to a category that doesn't feel natural to you.

- What is your body type? While the first point was of how you view yourself, and required some introspection, this point requires you to take a long, hard look at yourself and truthfully accept your body in all it's glory. If you can do something to better your body, do it. If you can't, dress in a way that makes the best of what you have. As they say, shop for the size that you are, rather than what you wish you were. Being in denial about your problem areas just leads to awkward moments, avoid that at all costs!

Once you have the physical and the mental aspect covered, you will have a pretty clear picture on how to dress in a way that compliments your body and your personality. Don't dress up like the model you saw, but feel free to take inspiration from what you liked about her outfit. This is where the boutique industry comes in. Not only will a professional designer guide you according to your body and age group, they will also help you pick up elements from the current fashion that will suit you best!
